Please note that the information on this website has NOT been updated since late 2009. A brief, quite brief, update not befitting the changes in Bayankhongor is below:
Much of the information related to the province's attractions is still valid: the Hangai and Govi Altai mountains still exist and the 600,000 year old cave drawings haven't gone anywhere in the last three years.
However there are a great many changes: there are many more buses, flights and means of transportation between Bayankhongor and Ulaanbaatar, and even other cities in Mongolia; it's party time and the place to be is at the airport. It's also quite likely that tour operators have changed. In addition Bayankhongor city has many more conveniences including a spiffy new hotel (old Bayankhongor Restaurant location), additional restaurants that serve fried chicken (old Flower Disco location) even to foreigners!, new grocery stores and concomitantly the sighting of new fruit varieties to keep the old standby: apple, company. There is also a new shower house!

Bayankhongor encompasses three major geographical zones including a lush northern forest zone (hangai), the central grass steppe zone and the awe inspiring Gobi Desert zone. There are many attractions to see in Bayankhongor including natural sites like the Shargaljuut Hot Springs and man-made structures like the Chess Stones of Erdentsogt. In addition there is a wealth of Flora and Fauna including such rare species as the Gobi Bear.
The information on this site is useful for independent travelers, group travelers, you crazy Mongol Rally folk, you crazier people that follow Mongol Rally folk and the many of you that visit Bayankhongor outfitted with refurbished WWII resupply vehicles in case Chinggis' Mongol hordes resurface.
